While we don’t pretend to understand every aspect of the world we live in, we believe sustainability is the only way of our future. Our environmentally friendly and sustainable practices begin in our fields.
Take for example our blueberries. We apply sawdust at the base of the plants to increase absorption of water, minimize evaporation of water, and to build a rich soil for the plants to grow.
Between the rows we plant grass to control weeds and to minimize habitats for pests. Not only does help keep the fruit clean during harvest, but it also helps prevent runoff during the rainy season. (Rainy season is the 9 months that we are not harvesting in the Pacific Northwest!) While the berries are ripening and during harvest, we use trained falcons to scare away the birds. Weeding, and pruning, is done by hand.
When the berries arrive in our plant for processing we take equal care to ensure that a berries are cleaned and packaged in a safe responsible manner. We manage our waste stream and recycle all of our berry crates and packaging materials. Water is recycled and reused.
We have also undertaken several energy saving initiatives. Energy efficient lights in the plant mounted with photo sensors turn on and off as you walk through the plant, high-speed doors and extra thick insulation protect against unnecessary heat loss in the freezers, variable frequency drives match motor speed to job just to name a few.
While we don’t pretend to understand every aspect of the world we live in we believe sustainability is the only way of the future.
